Through the years, I've had to come up with all sorts of solutions for my 'blank page phobia' (BPP). To be left alone with the dreadful void of having to choose which ideas are worth bringing to the surface and which are not is what fuels my nightmares. On such a day when time was pressing and I had to make a choice, I had a revelation: I can do anything I like, it's my birthday week! So I put aside all my sketches, all my inconclusive ideas and turned a blank page. The result is a candid and somewhat cheeky piece, riddled with the naiveté of major triads and tonal resolutions in the places you least expect them. It's one of my weirdest and yet most cherished pieces. So now whenever I have to face BPP again, I can tell myself: it's my birthday week - or - it's my birthday month - or even - it's 6 months within my birthday!
